For many services, their initial HD network origination launches were created to operate in parallel with the existing SD services. To avoid potential compromise of the viewer experience in HD or SD and to protect the revenue from the SD audiences a largely separate technical operation may have been created. HD viewership and ad revenues are growing and with the pending transition of the majority of the audience from SD to HD there are significant challenges in protecting both services and reducing operating and support costs. The executives on this panel have faced these issues and will share their challenges, experiences, and thoughts on issues ranging from program acquisition, production, distribution to affiliates, origination and transmission.

New technologies like TIVO are causing a sea change in advertising and marketing. Retailers, the hospitality industry, and Government Agencies are building out-of-home networks, using dynamic digital media to reach their customers wherever they are. How soon is this market going to grow into the multi-billion dollar market that has been projected? Through the advancements and enhancements of technologies and delivery solutions, the market has conditioned itself for video and rich media applications. Very simply, digital display systems are virtually everywhere. As organizations understand how to get the best return from the investment for their displays, they’ll recognize the value of satellite-based networks for the delivery of their content, such as: centralized control; consistent and reliable delivery; timely and immediate updates; and live communications. Bottom line, in comparison to the development and display of video and rich media content, the delivery is the least costly component – So, why not make it the best, most robust and effective solution available: Satellite?

Newsgathering - The Cost Complexity Multiplier
Open to Conference Attendees Only!
Track 4:
HD World
The penetration of high definition production has been steadily increasing since 1998 when the networks began to offer their prime time programming in high definition. Most recently live Sporting events have made the transition to high definition. One of the last remaining genres to make the transition to high definition is news. With the advent of low cost high definition camcorders and the Nextel frequency relocation agreement, which will replace the broadcasters ENG microwave equipment with digital radios, HD newsgathering is becoming technically possible and economically viable. This session will review the progress in the area of high definition newsgathering and discuss the experiences of stations that have already made the transition to HD ENG.

Media Food Chain
Open to Conference Attendees Only!
Track 3:
Media & Entertainment
The media food chain that links content creators to content consumers keeps getting more complex as media outlets multiple, digital formats proliferate and new management and distribution technologies gain acceptance. In a non-linear, multi-platform, multi-distributor world, will media companies increasingly turn to outsourcing to meet their needs? Or will they instead seek to bring their requirements in-house in a vertical integration play? The outcome will change the balance of power between content creators, networks, distribution vendors and the network affiliate/MSO/IPTV provider. What will be the impact on the satellite service provider? Will they see their offerings become commodities, or will they become value-added partners controlling more links in the chain?
SPEAKERS: Louis DiMauro, Vice President Sales, North America, Ascent Media Network Services John Honeycutt, Executive Vice President, Media Technology and Operations, Discovery Communications, Inc. Barbara Jaffe, Senior Vice President, Advanced Technology and Operations, Home Box Office Gwynne McConkey, Senior Vice President, Operations, Information Systems & Technology, Lifetime Entertainment Services MODERATOR: Robert Bell, Executive Director, Society of Satellite Professionals and World Teleport Association
Technical Challenges in HD Content Production and Distribution

Track 4:
HD World
The challenge of integrating HD production, origination and distribution systems loom large for media companies, particularly where Media Operations are performing 24/7 mission-critical SDTV Operations in its current and core process today. It impacts the entire television "food chain", including, infrastructure (e.g., real estate, air conditioning, power systems), technical and engineering systems (e.g., HDTV routing, distribution, monitoring, transmission, etc.), production (aspect ratio management, graphics, etc.), new digital workflow and the creative process, all of which, have significant impact to the bottom line. Our expert panel will explore these issues, share their experiences in managing the transition of the television process from SDTV to HDTV, and tell us why they believe HDTV will be an important component of the future digital television landscape.

The Next Generation Content Distribution Backbone: Will it be Satellite?
Open to Conference Attendees Only!
Track 3:
Media & Entertainment
Since the late 1970’s satellite services have been a primary platform to distribute high quality television content to consumers either via broadcasters, cable system operators or, in the case of DTH providers, directly to consumers. The overall, efficiency, reliability and effectiveness of the satellite technology is a well documented model and continues to be the most effective point to multi-point, high-quality content distribution technology currently available. But can satellite services continue to compete with the bandwidth power of terrestrial based systems for the delivery of high quality content, particularly HDTV, in the future? And if on-demand, non-linear and interactive models are important parts of the future media landscape; will the “one way” nature of the satellite technology impede the ability for satellite systems to be part of future content distribution platforms? These are just some of the questions and/or topics that will be explored by our expert panel as we seek to better understand how satellite service providers may have a place in the content distribution backbone of the future.

Advertising and HD - the Advertisers' Responsibility. Where are all the HD Ads?
Open to Conference Attendees Only!
Track 4:
HD World
As HD programming becomes more prevalent, what’s missing from most broadcasts is commercials in HD. Why aren't marketers showing their ads in HD?
The stock answer to that question has been a familiar combination of cost, audience, and content. It's too expensive, not enough people are watching, and broadcasters have been slow to accept commercials in HD, or so we've all heard many times over. But the real reasons -- and the issues facing marketers, agencies, broadcasters and even consumers --are much more complex. Agencies complain that even though they often shoot in HD and film, they send commercials in SD because broadcasters make it too difficult with technical variations from network to network. Meanwhile, broadcasters say marketers’ expectations are too high in what for them is a difficult and expensive HD transition. Still, both agree progress needs to be made as more and more consumers who watch in HD are getting annoyed when their amazing viewing experience is marred by grainy, boxed commercials. This session will bring together broadcasters, ad agencies, and technology providers for a lively discussion of just what's going on and what's being done to bring more HD ads into the TV-viewing mainstream. SPEAKERS: Carole Gall, Senior Partner, Director of Broadcast Production, JWT Karl Meisenbach, Director of Advertising, HDNet Neil Nguyen, Executive Vice President, Sales & Operations, DG FastChannel David Perry, Director of Broadcast Operations, Saatchi & Saatchi Derek Smith, Senior Vice President, Level 3 Content Markets MODERATOR: Beth Snyder Bulik, Technology Reporter, Advertising Age |
