Building the GIG - a Technology Challenge near and far-term
Open to Conference Attendees Only!
DoD is building the Global Information Grid (GIG) to provide a global internet-like capability to its users. The GIG will consist of a world-wide network of space and terrestrial systems integrated seamlessly to achieve net-centricity. It is being built in phases with planned enhancements in features and capabilities. Beginning with today’s legacy stovepipe systems, the GIG will gradually transform into a fully networked capability as new and emerging systems, services, and applications become available.

The GIG architecture needs to provide consideration and inclusion of commercial practices and capabilities such as: standards to facilitate interoperability; commercial products (COTS) to reduce system costs; use of commercial SATCOM to augment MILSATCOM systems with additional bandwidths; and services such as Teleports for connecting deployed users to the terrestrial segment of the GIG. New technologies relating to both space and ground segments are critical to building the GIG and for supporting high data rate communications from air, land, and ship borne terminals. Should DoD fund the development of the requisite technologies or look at the commercial sector for a technology partnership? This session will explore both near and far-term technology issues and how relevant commercial technologies can be infused into the design of the space and terrestrial segments of the GIG.

Why Does it Look so Bad in My House?
Open to Conference Attendees Only!
Track 5: HD World
We have all seen the pristine HD pictures at the conference exhibits, in the mobile units, studios and network control rooms. They are absolutely stunning, but then what happens to them? HDTV becomes a very relative term. With satellite providers claiming superior HD quality in their ads and cable companies filing for injunctions in court to stop them, while others announce delivery of prime time HD shows available over the web, there are obviously some pretty major differences in the delivery systems. The experiences of Home Viewers with HDTV quality vary widely depending on the signal path and the devices used to deliver the picture to their home display, and even then the differences in displays themselves have a final major impact. What is happening to your signal from the time you finish a show to the time that it hits your eye? Join our panel of experts as they cover these issues and perhaps even give you a tip or two on what you can do to optimize your product for these distribution differences.

Hands Off My Spectrum! Terrestrial Threats to Satellite Communications
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
As radio frequency spectrum has evolved from a public trust into a multi-billion-dollar asset auctioned by governments, terrestrial threats to satellite communications are rising. More intensive use of satellites is leading to rising accidental and deliberate interference. Even more worrisome are the efforts of terrestrial wireless technology companies to appropriate satellite frequencies for broadband wireless, 3G and 4G services. Already, in isolated cases, regulators have permitted broadband wireless companies to use portions of C and extended C-Band. The results could be television channels blasted off the air. With extended C-Band in heavy use by military customers, the potential spectrum grab also has national security implications. This panel of satellite users and service providers explores the present and potential threats, their probable impact, and what you can do to secure the future of satellite communications.

HD Sports: Is the Science Project Over?
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
    Track 5: HD World
HD Sports broadcasts continue to be the leading edge in HD and will continue to be year after year. From a production perspective there is a degree of maturity and ease in terms of operations. Even though the big science project is over – there is still some lack of clarity as to why certain problems persist including drop outs and bottom feeder issues. The integration of so many control points and complexities put us at the potential cusp of failure for events, much more so than in TV productions. We are at the edge in terms of communications and control, but there still are infrastructure issues. Some of the big issues are glossed over because they are not as interesting or seem simple. Hear about these issues and lessons learned from CBS, NBA, NBC and VERSUS. A question and answer period will follow.

Dispersion: Content Ownership and Digital Rights in a Multi-Network, Multi-Platform and Multi-Device World
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
    Track 6: IP Media Expo
Dispersion can be generally defined as the separation of one into many, such as when light hits a prism, resulting in a rainbow effect of light. A similar phenomenon has gained momentum over the past couple of years in the media industry as individual content titles are rapidly being delivered across multiple networks onto multiple platforms and into multiple devices. Some argue that this embodies the media industry’s need to address the consumer’s desire to have more control over how, when and where they consume content. However, significant business rules must be addressed in order to safeguard the content from unauthorized distribution and preserve the integrity of the content as well as. This panel will discuss issues affecting content owners, digital rights management firms and video service providers as they seek to balance new market dynamics with established business rules for content distribution and monetization.

    Ramping Up for ‘08
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
Every four years, media companies and transmission service providers are challenged to balance a limited supply of ground-based, satellite and wireless telecommunications services against an insatiable appetite of demand to bring a series of major stories to a global audience.
2008 is upon us and with it a series of amazing stories that include:
  • U.S. presidential campaign – culminating with U.S. political party conventions in the late summer and Election Day in November
  • Beijing 2008, Games of the XXIX Olympiad Games in August
How is the marriage of customer requirements and supply services going to be achieved? How are the media companies planning to blend traditional and new media applications to provide a richer experience to the consumer? How are telecommunications service companies in the terrestrial, wired and wireless “space” preparing for the onslaught of global service demand? Will the events of 2008 bring HDTV to the mainstream of the news gathering and news presentation business?

    Intermixing Formats & HD Conversion
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
    Track 5: HD World
For over 50 years, analog television, its systems and infrastructure ruled the nest in the TV programming, engineering and operations business. Even the most fundamental change of that era, the advent of color television, relied on the cornerstone technology fabric that had existed previously -- the analog NTSC standard. The world of digital has changed what was once a single standard and protocol into more than any of us would care to admit. SDI, HD-SDI, DVB ASI, 10 BaseT, 100 BaseT, GigE, and 10Gbps protocols are just some of the networks that are being used in the broadcast/cable plant to support the creative, production, contribution and distribution media food chain. And guess what? The consumer couldn't care less what the protocol is because all the consumer cares about is seeing and hearing content any time, anywhere, anyhow. The engineering and operations challenge is to make sure we marry these standards together so that content can be created, produced and distributed to displays as large as over 100”” to devices that can fit in the palm of your hand. Our panel of experts will share their experiences, their wins and losses in this amazing journey – the conversion of television (now media) from analog to digital.

    The Mobile Warfighter
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
The mobile warfighter has always been an integral part of military command, control, and communications but now it also is becoming an integral part of future battlefield scenarios. Today's warfighter needs ever increasing ubiquitous access to information and applications, such as assured communications to aircraft, ships and soldiers on the move; battlefield imagery from satellites and UAVs; and reachback to sustaining bases. To support such applications, communications architectures must support platforms such as tanks, planes, ships, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and handhelds terminals. These communications are supported by a mix of commercial and military communications systems, including wireless and satellite.

This panel will discuss the satellite communications needs of the Mobile Warfighter, including the evolution of applications and platforms. To understand how satellite architectures will support mobile warfighters, the panel will discuss the mobile capabilities of current and future DoD systems as well as the role of commercial systems as an integral part of this capability.

Taming 5.1 Audio Production for HD
    Open to Conference Attendees Only!
    Track 5: HD World
As broadcasters march ahead to originate, distribute and transmit an ever-increasing volume of HD programming, many continue to fall short of exploiting the full potential of HD’s Dolby Digital 5.1 audio format. While Hollywood studios have long since adopted 5.1 as the gold standard for HD production and deliver an overwhelming majority of pre-produced HD content in 5.1, broadcasters shy away from a full commitment to 5.1 for everyday production. With the exception of high profile sports and entertainment programs, most broadcasters do not have a comprehensive roadmap for the changeover to 5.1 production in-house. Why are so many broadcasters willing to forego the viewer excitement and competitive value of high-quality multi-channel audio? Is it really that hard to get 5.1 right? Are there economical common-sense approaches to news and informational programming in 5.1? Does 5.1 require a complete reinvention of production workflow or simply un-biased application of good production practices? Our panel of 5.1 audio pioneers boasts a wide range of experience of both production technology and broadcast operations that runs the gamut from entertainment specials to nature documentaries. The panel will asses the path forward for 5.1 audio and address the interconnected nature of production philosophy, infrastructure planning, and production workflow. This is sure to be a lively discussion that may produce some startling conclusions that will be as relevant and informative for the local broadcaster and small-scale content creator as for the network VP who share in the belief that 5.1 is a critical competitive component of HD TV.
