Track 4: General Sessions

This 2-hour seminar is addressed to government and enterprise professionals who need an introduction to the fundamentals of satellite communications. The first hour will cover satellite basics including orbits, frequencies, digital transmission techniques and ground station technology for point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and full-mesh satellite communications networks. The second hour will discuss applications for communications satellites - including mission-critical private networks, disaster recovery, rural telephony and multicast. The seminar will conclude with an overview of recent and proposed communications satellite systems.

This seminar will provide an understanding of when to use satellites and how satellites both compete and coexist with terrestrial communications. The attendee will obtain a knowledge of terminology and concepts that will be addressed in more detail during the two days of the SATCON Conference.

Seminar Instructor
Burt H. Liebowitz is Principal Network Engineer at the MITRE Corporation, McLean, Virginia. He has more than 30 years experience in computer networking, the last seven of which have focused on Internet-over-satellite services. He was President of NetSat Express Inc., a leading provider of such services. Before that he was Chief Technical Officer for Loral Orion responsible for Internet-over-satellite access products. Mr. Liebowitz has authored two books on distributed processing and numerous articles on computing and communications systems. He has lectured extensively on computer networking. He holds three patents for satellite-based data networking systems. Mr. Liebowitz has B.E.E. and M.S. in Mathematics degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an M.S.E.E. from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Today's military relies heavily on the use of satellites as a part its strategy in winning our Nation's future battles.  The Army will require extensive use of military satellites in its arsenal, augmented with the additional capabilities and services that commercial satellites provide to ensure full spectrum dominance on the battlefield. Future initiatives ranging from satellite Communications-On-The-Move (COTM) capabilities provided by next generation military satellites, to the seamless integration of our DoD Teleport sites supporting tactical warfighter access to the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) and the Global Information Grid (GIG) - will support Army requirements for high speed, secure, survivable/endurable, protected satellite COTM to disadvantages terminals in a transformed, net-centric operating environment.

Commercial satellite services play a major role in the infrastructural support requirements for military operations world wide.  The governments extensive use of commercial satellite services in the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have highlighted the value added that satellite service providers bring its DoD customers.  To support the demanding network connectivity needs of the deployed war fighter, the US Government and its coalition partners have employed a full range of satellite-based technologies to deliver voice, data, video, asset management, personnel tracking and broadcast media services.  This panel will explore the lessons learned, successes and future demands that the US Government will face when employing the use of commercial satellite services to support its expanding operations.

The DBS Challenge

Having exceeded the 20 million subscriber mark, the DBS industry continues to add new customers at a torrid pace. However, the industry now faces stiff competition from an entrenched cable industry that has finally awoken to the DBS challenge. This session will feature a wide-ranging discussion with key DBS leaders about the weapons they are now using to attract new subscribers (and retain current users). This "must-attend" session will explore issues from PVR’s to HDTV, local signals to advanced set-top boxes...and how the DBS platforms will use them all to grow the business in the coming years. Across the globe unprecedented demand for IP-based applications has driven millions of end-users to satellite network solutions. Investment in VSAT technology has resulted in new generation broadband satellite services, currently being deployed, with IP over DVB established as the de facto standard. These new technologies provide for voice, data, video, email, and fax applications, and with increased functionality have introduced new techniques - such as "content caching" and "spoofing" - to minimize the effects of satellite "latency" or "propagation delay". This session will address these and other technological advances that offer total networking solutions without the "gremlins".
